All-change at Atomos: Peter Barber takes over as CEO
3:02

Peter Barber has confirmed on social media reports from last week's Sydney Morning Herald and Australian business press that he is taking over as the new Atomos CEO.

Atomos has had a very interesting year so far. Only deciding late on to go to NAB, it then arrived at the show with a newly diverse product portfolio that included headphones. PTZ cameras, the TX-RX 4K wireless video system, and the ATOMOSphere cloud-based production ecosystem and membership platform.

And now, as the Bulls N' Bears story in the Sydney Morning Herald revealed on May 1, it has a new CEO in Peter Barber. You can see him in the video below talking about the company's new products in our video shot on the NAB 2025 show floor.

It's been a tumultuous few days in Australia with a fairly dramatic election taking place, so it's little surprise that Barber himself didn't confirm the posting until Saturday on LinkedIn

"The work we have done over the past year to rebuild and restructure the Company has laid a strong foundation for the future. We are creating a more agile, resilient organisation — one that is better positioned to navigate change and seize new opportunities. I believe Atomos has an extraordinary opportunity to expand into new markets, drive broader innovation, and build upon its proud history of pioneering technology in the video production and content creation space," he wrote in a statement.

Blackmagic Design co-founder (and original co-owner) Barber was appointed as Atomos' new chief operating officer in February last year. He said at the time that he was looking at taking the company into adjacent markets, and he has proven as good as his word.

Wither Jeromy?

All this means that original Atomos co-founder, Jeromy Young, who rejoined the company in a blaze of publicity last January, is out once more, though it's worth noting that he has not been defenestrated. "Young, who steered Atomos from a garage startup to a globally recognised brand in video production tools, is stepping back into a non-executive director role, ensuring continuity during the shift," writes Australian finance site Bulls N' Bears

It further refers to him as saying that Barber is “the right leader at the right time.”

So, where does this leave the company? We will have to see how the new product lines take in the market, but its latest financials show AUS$8 million in cash receipts for the quarter, and it also secured a new AUS$13.7 million debt facility and cut costs by close to AUS$2 million.

Restructuring efforts are ongoing, with the company hoping to slice a further AUS$1 million from its monthly fixed costs by July. That's a fair old amount, but it says this will be aided by strategic redundancies and cost-cutting initiatives. Interestingly, Bulls N' Bears also says that the company is "pushing toward a direct-to-consumer sales model, particularly in Europe, as a hedge against geopolitical tariff risks."

tl;dr

  • Peter Barber has officially taken over as the new CEO of Atomos, succeeding Jeromy Young, who is now stepping back to a non-executive director role.
  • Atomos has expanded its product portfolio, launching new items such as headphones and PTZ cameras, alongside the TX-RX 4K wireless video system and ATOMOSphere cloud-based production platform.
  • The company has reported AUS$8 million in cash receipts for the quarter and secured a AUS$13.7 million debt facility while implementing cost-cutting measures to reduce monthly fixed costs.
  • Atomos is shifting towards a direct-to-consumer sales model, particularly in Europe, to mitigate geopolitical tariff risks and enhance market agility.
